Long before you have a baby, you know that women's bodies are all different shapes, types, and sizes! So, why would anyone expect all women to be comfortable using a "one-size-fits-all" breastshield? Breast tissue is very delicate at any time, but particularly so when you are nursing a baby. Medela has developed an entire line of breastshields to meet your individual needs.
PersonalFit Breastshields These breastshields, available in five sizes, are designed to accomodate different nipple and breast sizes. The PersonalFit sizes are: Small (21mm), Medium (24mm) - same diameter as standard breastshield, Large (27mm), Extra Large (30mm), and XX Large (36mm). New Medela Double Breastpumps include one pair of the medium size (24mm) PersonalFit breastshields. Some also include a pair of large breastshields.

How do you know which size breastshields to order?
A very good question. There are no set rules as to which size breastshield will work for you. There is a certain element of trial and error involved. The majority of women (90%) are quite comfortable using the medium size (24mm) breatshield but here are a few guidelines that may help.
When pumping, the nipple should be pulled down comfortably into the shield and you should feel as though the pumped breasts are empty when you are finished. If you have large nipples and they rub against the inside of the shield when you pump causing some discomfort and you feel as though you are not emptying the breast it may be time to try a larger breastshield. If pumping is actually painful to the nipple it may be time to go up a couple of sizes. On the other hand, if the nipple is not pulled down into the breastshield tube when pumping, you see a red round mark on the breast from the shield, and feel as though you are not emptying the breast, it might be an idea to try a smaller shield.
The 36mm size XX Large breastshield has now been introduced. If you decide to try that size be especially aware of the amount of milk you are collecting when pumping. Using a breastshield on a regular basis that is too large or too small can lead to decreased milk production. PersonalFit Breastshields are available in pairs or indivdually. Be sure you own or purchase the Medela PersonalFit Connectors that attach the breastshield to the bottle and tube, if you do not already own some.
These breastshields will work with all current Medela pumps (They do not work with Medela Disposable Kits or the Medela Little Hearts Manual Pump - but both these products were discontinued some years ago.)
Another obsolete product, the Medela Hands Free Pumping Attachment Kit also had to be used with the standard one piece breastshield (see below).

 | Standard Breastshield. This is the regular breastshield that used to be included in most of Medela's breast pump kits. Most new Medela breastpumps contain the medium size (24mm) PersonalFit breastshields in the new Medela breastpumps, including the Pump In Style Advanced Breastpumps, and the Medela Freestyle Breastpump. Most women find this breast shield very comfortable, and do not need a specialized breastshield. The standard size breastshield and the medium size PersonalFit Breastshield have the same size cone or flange, so are the same fit on the breast. So what is the deifference? The standard breastshield is a one piece combination breastshield and connector - it does not come apart into a separate breastshield and connector as the ones shown above do. The standard shield is only made in the medium 24mm size. If you think you may need a different size breashield you might want to choose the PersonalFit shield - that way you can use your connectors with any size breastshield you may want to purchase. Whereas the PersonalFit and SoftFit breastshields can be purchased in pairs, these breastshields are only sold individually. |

 | Breastshield insert. Women with small nipples can use this insert inside the standard breastshield to enhance their comfort and pumping effectiveness while using a breast pump. It provides a shields size of 21mm. This insert is not designed to be used with the PersonalFit breastshields or the SoftFit. The breastshield insert is equivalent to using the Small Size (21mm) PersonalFit Breastshield. Using the PersonalFit allows moms with small nipples to have a shield that fits their breast, using just one flange instead of putting an insert inside a standard shield. |
 | Extra Large Glass Breastshield Kit This breastshield can be used with the Medela Pump In Style (Original model or Advanced model), Lactina, or Classic Breastpumps. The kit includes one extra large (40mm) breastshield with a rubber stopper, and instructions. The breastshield does not require a connector. |

 | One white membrane - center mount, used on VERY old model pumps -- from the 1990s. If your pump uses the center mount yellow valve and membrane, you are recommended to replace them with the offset yellow valve and white membrane (part #8000001) above, as the yellow valve with center mount has been discontinued by Medela. The only reason Medela continues to manufacture this white membrane is becuase it is needed for the Haberman (Special Needs) Feeder. | $1.35 each |
