Medela Breastshields

Long before you have a baby, you realize that women do not all have the same shape, type, or size body! So, why would anyone expect that all women could be comfortable using a "one-size-fits-all" breastshield? Breast tissue is very delicate at any time, but particularly so when you are nursing a baby. Medela has developed an entire line of breastshields to meet your individual needs.

PersonalFit Breastshields These breastshields, available in five sizes, are designed to accomodate different nipple and breast sizes. The PersonalFit sizes are: Small (21mm - same diameter as the old breastshield insert), Medium (24mm - same diameter as standard breastshield), Large (27mm), Extra Large (30mm), and XX Large (36mm). Most new Medela breast pumps now include one pair of the medium size (24mm) PersonalFit breastshields. The exception to this is the Harmony breast pump which comes with one SoftFit breastshield.

How do you know which size breastshields to order?
A very good question. There are no set rules as to which size breastshield will work for you. There is a certain element of trial and error involved. The majority of women are quite comfortable using the medium size breatshield but here are a few guidelines that may help.
When pumping, the nipple should be pulled down comfortably into the shield and you should feel as though the pumped breasts are empty when you are finished. If you have large nipples and they rub against the inside of the shield when you pump causing some discomfort (and maybe even incomplete emptying of the breast) it may be time to try a size larger breastshield. If pumping is actually painful to the nipple it may be time to go up a couple of sizes. On the other hand, if the nipple is not pulled down into the breastshield tube when pumping it might be an idea to try a smaller shield. The 36mm size XX Large breastshield has now been introduced. If you decide to try that size be especially aware of the amount of milk you are collecting when pumping. Using a breastshield on a regular basis that is too large can lead to decreased milk production. There are Two PersonalFit Breastshields per pack. Be sure to order the connectors that attach the breastshield to the pump, if you do not already own some. These breastshields will work with all Medela pumps except Disposable Kits and Little Hearts Manual Pump.

If you plan to use the Medela Hands Free Pumping Attachment Kit you will need to purchase the standard one piece breastshield (see below), as the PersonalFit Breastshields will not work with that attachment kit.

SoftFit Breastshields. The SoftFit breastshields are constructed of a soft, flexible silicone material that comfortably massages the breast and areola while you are using a breast pump. Two Softfit Breastshields per pack They work with all Medela breast pumps, except the Little Hearts Manual Breastpump, and Disposable Kits. This breast shield is designed for use by women who have regular sized nipples. Women with large nipples should use the PersonalFit Breastshield. A connector is needed to attach the SoftFit breastshield to the breast pump. Be sure to order the connectors if you do not already own some.

Two Softfit Breastshields $9.95

Breastshield Connectors are needed for both the PersonalFit and the SoftFit Breastshields, to attach the breastshield to the breast pump. Two Connectors per pack. They are NOT needed for the Standard Breastshield, or the Extra Large Glass Breastshield.

Standard Breastshield. This is the regular breastshield that used to be included in most of Medela's breast pump kits. However, Medela is planning to phase out this breastshield, and has already started putting medium size PersonalFit breastshields in the new Pump In Style Breastpumps. Most women find this breast shield very comfortable, and do not need a specialized breastshield. The standard size breastshield and the medium size PersonalFit Breastshield have the same size flange, so are the same fit on the breast. Whereas the PersonalFit and SoftFit breastshields can be purchased in pairs, these breastshields are sold individually. If you plan to use the Medela Hands Free Pumping Attachment Kit you will need to use these breastshields as the PersonalFit and SoftFit breastshields will not fit with that attachment kit.
